Floor solutions, wall solutions, entrance and exit solutions .... the other day I even noticed a job advert for a 'solutions architect' (customer enquiries officer) and a 'solutions-searching solution' (newspaper selling advertising space). Will solutions eat themselves?

Private Eye was what alerted me to this in the first place - I had been imbibing the 'solutions' culture without being fully aware of it - now you can see it everywhere you look. And yes, PvteFraxer, there are problems everywhere it seems, which refutes the John Lennon view that 'there are no problems, only solutions' - or does it? Perhaps he was even more visionary than we realised!

My personal favourite is the 'American meal solutions' section in Tesco Supermarkets.

The simple answer is that if people realised that they were going to work every day to earn money to buy rubbish, they'd rethink their priorities. Make them think that they have more problems than they do, and they'll thank you for getting rid of them.

Now, I need to somehow make a meal from this frankfurter type sausage and this long thin bread roll. Any ideas?

A genuine catch phrase. I think the marketing people think that people see themselves as having "Problems." So they capitalise on inspiring gulliable people to think they also have problems a need to a "solution" to everything, from the kitchen wall to the entrance to the loo!
I hope the EAT themselves, and drown in the verbal excrement they will spread to their last advert!

Because everything is a problem, a problem with your floor will be resolved by a company providing floor solutions. The problem doesn't need to be bad, you might just want a different colour.

Hmmmm, Solutions are a problem, and we need the solution, we need someone who provides solutions solutions... Yes, they may well just eat themselves....

It is a ploy to make you decide between fixing your problem or not. As though the product they are selling is really going to solve your problems. It helps to get the focus off of price...which is important. It plays well for people who want to end an inconvenience and are willing to impulsively react to something promising immediate gratification.

Private Eye has been running a column on this very subject for a long time. My favourite was this sign spotted in a hotel bathroom: "Swiss hygiene solutions". Presumably they mean bleach?
