Simply to answer this question on must go way back to the days of tin pan alley. The major influences of rock are artist such as big mama Thornton who did hound dog first, before Elvis! Elvis didn't write anything (original or by himself). So rock is big or became big because of the 12 Barr blues. Big Joe turner, without these artist from the 30;s and 40's underground then bill Haley and Elvis would be late on their 50's fame!

You'll get a lot of answers and debate on this one. But if you check old hit charts carefully, you'll see that Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis, and Jerry Lee Lewis will get most of the credit. I'm speaking from memory, (I'm was around back then) Don't have time to look up specifics.

The Very First song to be called "Rock 'N Roll" was a song by Bill Haley and his Commits. The song was called "Rock around the clock"

"...When the clock strikes 2, 3, and 4, gonna put on my shoes and out the door, gonna rock around the clock to night"

And this was in Feb 1956

Everyone in my age group knows it was Elvis Presley. I remember when he use to dance and move his hips. the news media would say how sinful and vulgar these moves were. But he kept going and didn't let it stop him. Today, the moves that are made my some groups are really terrible. The moves that Elvis made were nothing compared to today's groups. Elvis will always be "The King of Rock'n Roll"

We would not have rock as we know it without Chuck Berry or Jerry Lee Lewis, they gave us the roll.

Rock is a form of popular music from the mid 20th century which typically features a vocal melody (often with vocal harmony) that is supported by accompaniment of electric guitars, a bass guitar, and drums, often with a strong back beat. Keyboard instruments such as organ, piano, or synthesizers are often used in many types of rock music. While brass and woodwind instruments, such as saxophone were common in some styles in earlier development of rock, they are less common in the newer subgenres of rock music since the 1990s. The genre of rock music is broad, and its boundaries loosely-defined, with related genres such as soul and funk sometimes being included in the definition of the term.

A major formative influence on rock was rock and roll, and rockabilly. In the 1960s, as British rock developed, the term "rock music" became popular. With the "British Invasion" this reinvigorated musical style spread back to the United States, and became an international cultural phenomenon with considerable social impact. Rock has evolved into a multitude of highly-varying styles with widespread popularity.
