Dear Rose,
To be technically and politically correct, you are "Indian-American". However, I have met people in USA who came here from India and married Americans, became US citizens, and had children. They do NOT consider their children mixed race or to be Indian-Americans. And their children are going to school and doing well in school and so far as I know, these children blend in and are fully accepted. I just don't see a problem for you. I think you are making a big deal out of nothing. However, I would not hesitate to show pride in your heritage, both from your mom and from your dad, because if people realize you are proud of your heritage, that really defeats the negativity. Most Americans are of some kind of mixed heritage. In Europe they call us "vegetable soup" cause we are all a little of this and a little of that. The bottom line is that I recommend you tell people (but only when asked) that you are caucasian, but you have lineage back to Europe and India. Hope this helps.

"Race" is not a scientific term; it's a social construct. There is no genetic or phenotypical basis for the term. And you confuse the question. You begin by saying your "race" is Caucasian (what does that mean?) and Indian (that's a country). Then you note that people say you look Portuguese or Greek; again, not "races."

Race is a social construct. There aren't distinct groups of people, rather genetic differences in geographic groups of people are gradiated - that is to say they fade into each other. Biologically speaking, there is only one race - the human race.

Culturally speaking, many people identify with people from the same culture group as their own. Your father is Indian so perhaps he celebrates certain Indian holidays or prepares food in a way different from non-Indian people. Your mother is from an unspecified country (USA?) so her worldview and general way of doing things will be different. In this respect, you can look at both of their traditions and worldviews and use what you think will be valuable in life.

In short, there is no need to label yourself this or that. You're human. You're a world citizen. Enjoy your life. :)

Most Indians are (mostly) caucasian. There is a small amount of mongolian and ******* influence in some parts of the country. The mongolian influence is high in north eastern India.

You're a mutt. Just like most of the people in the United States. On a college application, you would be good to put the INdian part down. You might get more aid.
You'd have to write in the "other" category where it says race.

You're mixed race -- but does it matter?

The answer does depend to some extent on where the question is asked. In countries where race is a major issue and there are political and economic questions involved, you might have a definite legal classification, which would vary iwth the country.

according to the US you'd be white. Caucasians are obviously considered white, as are Indo-Aryans, and Greeks and Portuguese are considered white as well

You are of mixed ancestry like over 99% of the human population. And your race is human.

I wouldn't worry about that. If I did I'd have to check every box on every exam I have ever taken! lol.
If you are worried about statistics and paperwork, then just mark other. If you are worried about knowing for yourself, just accept you are the same as the rest of us. NONE of us are pure anything.
