I have a photography weblog (http://africa-in-pictures.blogspot.com), with pictures of South Africa (I am a starting freelance photographer). How do I make sure people find me on the internet? How do make sure my name and weblog pops up when people are looking for photographers? I already submitted the link to Google, but I need more tips.

Submit your site to http://www.technorati.com , this will list all the posts you make and give more traffic, you may need to go to technorati each time you post to get it to update it.
There is a lot of things you can do to get a better ranking, the best thing to do is to do a search for search engine optimisation or SEO.
There is also a site called naymz you could try.
From looking at your blog (i assume its http://www.africa-in-pictures.blogspot.com/ ) one thing you could do is add more text to the posts to it as search engines tend to index text better than pictures and text is what people would be searching for. You could also try submitting a few pictures to flickr, think you can put a link to your homepage on there.
As to backlinks this is basically if you link to another blog your blog sends a link to the other blog, similarly if someone links to your blog then a link gets sent back to you, good way of getting your blog known on similar blogs.

Use a blog that lets you tag your blog entries, Yahoo 360 does that and they show up in Google really fast.
So if your entry was for photos of leopards in Africa you could use the tags 'leopard, big cats, africa' and so on.

the best way at the moment is linking from other websites, so try and get as many websites to link to your as you can, and perhaps in return offer to link to theirs!
