is it safe to wear the coil for more than five years as a contrceptive? do you think it should be changed? there was a time it gave me some acute abdominal pain but now i only feel the pain when i am menstruating. please advise me

If you have the Mirena which is the five year IUD.......the hormones run out in the five years. When this happens your periods and everything will come back. It will still prevent pregnancy while it is in place. (This is what my Dr told me.)

Sounds to me like you really need to see your Dr.

You need to be seen once a year, to have your coil assessed and to see if you need to have it changed or if it's doing fine.
My sister got pregnant with the coil, because she skipped her yearly exam.

You need to see your OB-GYN. They should be asking you about your coil when you have your yearly exam. If you are not having your pap and pelvic done annually you need to go in as soon as possible because you are at risk for pelvic inflammatory disease.

i think it has to be changed every 5 years so , yes, change it.
