Oh, Lordy, Honey, this is too big for a quick response from me. The different kinds of fabrics are categorized by their fiber content first, and then the methods by which they were made, and then special names for certain printing and dying techniques. There are thousands. Break it down like this:
Natural fibers vs. synthetics. Many people (especially in California) just do not use synthetics for anything other than occasional costuming or something where the natural fiber (generally silk vs. nylon) would be prohibitively expensive. I would not put a synthetic next to my skin if I could avoid it, but I have had to make an exception for nylon. I'm not allergic or anything, so that's OK.
Natural fibers you see most often are cotton, linen and wool. Cotton is almost all of what you see if you go into a shop which specializes in quilting, as many do these days. We aging baby-boomers get hooked on the creative aspects of quilting.
Linen you know from tablecloths and such, but it is also a nice thing for a dressy suit in the summertime. It wrinkles, but people get to accepting that if the fit is right so the wrinkles are not making you look frumpy. Wool, I am sure you know, is mostly because it is warm. And takes dye wonderfully, as all these natural fibers do.
And then there's silk. Poetry and dreams and all the finest is silk. And the lady who works with it had better have excellent hand lotion, because the tiniest irregularity will snag the surface and begin to dull the silk.
As for synthetics, just put each one in wikipedia search engine and see what you get. Like I say, most sewers don't much like them.

I don't know all the clothes fabrics in the world but I thinks there are 3 main categories: natural and syntetic and mixed. Naturals are: cotton, silk, wool, etc. Syntetics are: polyester, elastan, lycra, etc. Mixed are: viscose, modal, etc that are a mixture beetween natural fabrics like cotton and syntetic ones.
You should search more about its on the internet. Have a nice day!
