I hate it ! Never used it, never will. You know they're not really 'lol' - it's silly.

lol is used to laugh at an idea and not specifically words on most occasions. When people find an idea or a concept put forth in a question or an answer ludicrous, they often laugh. This lets the person asking the question, others answering the question, and anyone interested know that they get that this is funny (as in stupid). We are just having fun and helping each other here - we are not meaning to be so serious that anyone confuses us for "those" liberals. So please just lol and enjoy.

People laugh at their own words all the time. Why should it be different in writing?

it doesn't annoy me that much.
a little wierd? maybe.
in context (ie: in chatrooms), it's more usually meant to denote sarcasm (since there's no font or emoticon for satire).

example:
guy1: i like lollipops.
guy2: ..'cause, you're a sucker!
guy2: LOL

see- without the "lol" disclaimer, the statement could almost be taken as some kind of insult.
but if someone says "lol" in real life; now THAT would be wierd.

Some people use it just to let the readers know they are not being mean about the answer they are giving. I would rather see it than a lot of other things on here that are really offense.

People who do lol truly take this toooooo seriously. My dad has been glued to a computer screen since I was 12 and he does all that kind of stuff (my parents have been divorced for 9 years because of it). I would just say jk if I was joking but all that other stuff that needs decifered is toooo much.

I kind of think it is stupid. I don't know why it bugs me. Most of the time I have seen it used was when people are letting you know they find something funny and that shouldn't be annoying but it is to me.
