I got a temporary position at the IRS which I am starting in less than 2 weeks. My husband is in Iraq and gets his R&R, (2 week leave), in mid to late March.

Of course I will want the two weeks off, unpaid of course, but I will still want the job when he goes back to Iraq. When should I mention this to my supervisor? Do you think they will understand and give me the 2 weeks off and allow me to come back to work?

I want to be able to use this job on a resume later and I think it would be a great reference. I am just worried they won't allow me the weeks off so I will basically have to quit.

Any advice, opinions, suggestions, or experience with this kind of situation would help. Thanks!

You would think given the circumstances they would allow this. Like I said it is only a temporary position that will only last about 5 months.

The IRS is a governmental agency - your supervisor may have been in the military, and probably has lots of contacts who were in Vietnam. Those guys were really treated terribly after all they gave for us to live free here!

Maybe all that will play into it and you'll get the time off to spend time with your hero. If I was your boss, you'd have it. On the other hand, getting 2 weeks off at the IRS in March is a little like taking a temp job for the winter at Macy's and asking for the week before Christmas off... It is bad timing for that particular job.

BTW - I read your other posts about where to take him... has he said he wants beach and ocean? Ask him, because he might have had enough of sand and sun for a while. In March, I think there would still be snow-skiing in resorts that offer that. Or maybe a secluded mountain cabin resort with views of trees... just a thought.

You would have to discuss this with your supervisor to know the real answer. But, if I was the supervisor and someone came to me after they were hired before they started the job, or just after, looking for 2 weeks off I'd tell them they had a decision to make, the job or the time. A job is a job. And as much as I understand that you want to spend time with your husband, there are plenty of people who want and need the job who won't take 2 weeks off in the beginning of employment.

Tell them you need two weeks to sort out your marriage. they will understand...tell the story if you need to.
