I'm speaking of TNG, mostly. Even as a kid I could never get into SW. ST:TNG has some awesome story lines! Yoda sux...stupid muppet.

why?
"why" is the eternal, unanswerable question.
how it's cooler is prob'ly because 'trek has way better writers, multiple series to choose from, and is story-driven. if you don't like one, you can just watch another.
'wars is action-driven with too much emphasis on SFX, and little variety to choose from (only six movies and some cartoons).
sad because the 'clone wars' cartoon was better than all six movies put together.

The real question is: Why are Firefly(cancelled, I realize) and Battlestar Galactica so much cooler than any other sci-fi show ever made (okay, except for maybe Farscape which died before it's time.)
I think Star Trek should've quit after the first big screen movie, and Star Wars..well, I'd like to turn all the scripts over to Guillermo Del Toro or Peter Jackson and completely re-do that whole stinky mess of a story that Lucas crapped out in awful spurts and dribbles starting in 1977, AFTER I sue him for torturing humanity and wasting precious resources.

The United Federation of Planets in Star Trek is the equivalent of Star Wars' Galactic Republic/Empire.
The story focused on characters from Federation, who have military style discpline.
The story was set in the far future with descendants from Earth, providing a clear link and familiar background to the viewers' enviroment.
The story focused on a bright future.
My favorite series is Voyager, it feels so family related, maybe that's the reason I also like Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

You should have amplified on why YOU think ST is cooler than SW.
I like them both but in fairness SW has better story lines and SFX.

Star Trek is cheesy, overrun with bad actors, and painful to watch. Star Wars has lightsabers and Yoda. 'Nuff said.
