X is an abbreviation for the Greek letter chi spelled X.

This is the first letter in the name Christos, which is Greek for Christ.

Scholars has used a set of conventional abbreviations like Xmas in the margin notes, as they wrote notes for themselves and other scholars on ancient manuscripts.

This practise was used widely during the Middle Ages in Europe, and was started by monks in Ireland, Scotland and Wales, as the Roman Empire declined, and chaos increased on the continent of Europe.

The monks 'illuminated' these manuscripts as they copied them, with elaborate script and pictures, the best known being the Book of Kells.

The monks wrote notes to each other in Latin and Greek, which they learned from copying the old scrolls and books by hand.

x-mas is a way of writing CHRISTmas without using the word CHRIST.
so I'd say X-mas is what most of the world celebrates on December 25 when santa comes. The rest of us like to try to celebrate CHRISTmas.
