Igorot is most likely a general term for the many tribes which live in the Benguet, Sagada and Mountain Province areas, the Cordillera region in general. In most sources, it sites that the Igorots are grouped into six ethno-linguistic groups, the Bontoc, Ibaloi, Ifugao, Isneg (or Apayao), Kalinga, and the Kankana-ey.
However, Ifugao refers to the people, their language and the province they live in. The province of Ifugao is also located in the northern mountainous area of the Philippines. These people prefer to be called Ifugaos as opposed to the more generic and less accurate Igorot term that includes all the peoples of the Cordillera Region. They are known as an independent, agricultural society.
So it is not really accurate to say that an Ifugao is also an Igorot because there are many distinctions between the two groups. It has been a common misconception that all northern tribes/indigenous people are Igorots. They should not be generalized as such. It's like saying Apache Indians are the same as Comanche Indians, which is not at all correct.
Ifugaos and Igorots may carry similar genes since they have nearly the same physical traits. They also have similarities with some worship practices. But they don’t speak the same dialect. They wear native attire made from the same local material but they don’t weave or wear these clothes the same way. There are distinctions in designs and what these designs mean. It differentiates them from one another.
Igorots, I sumise, are more widely spread than Ifugaos, since they live in a larger land area. Some displaced Igorots have also been known to settle in the lowland provinces of Nueva Ecija, Zambales, La Union and Pangasinan. But unless you check with the Philippines' National Statistics Office census, I can’t be sure which of the two groups are more numerous.
Additionally, many Ifugaos and Igorots are educated in the modern way now. They now study, work and live abroad. So, i don't know how to account for Ifugaos and Igorots living in other countries since the Philippine government usually just list down one's nationality and not ethnicity.
