Mayo as mentioned above will work. You can also use olive oil. Just saturate the hair with it and leave it on for a few hours to let the lice suffocate. Any treatment that you choose will have to be done repeatedly, possibly a few times a day.

For carpets bedding etc. you will need to vacuum and wash laundry constantly. If you have stuffed animals you will need to secure them in a garbage back for a couple weeks until you are lice free.

As a preventative measure use tea tree oil in your shampoo. Many shampoos already contain it or you can buy pure tea tree oil and add a few drops to your favorite shampoo.

This has worked for me in the past.
Totally saturate the head and hair in mayonnaise, wrap the head and hair in plastic wrap, allow the mayo to set on the hair for an hour or more depending on how bad the infestation is.
Use a lice comb to remove the nits and eggs. Make sure you get all of the eggs out of the hair, the lice should be dead from suffocation, due to the mayo.
Wash the hair several times with a strong shampoo, to remove the mayo.
Hope this helps.

Pyrethrins. These are marigold extracts and are available at all drug counters. Pyrethroid based lice preparations are highly effective and typically of low toxicity to humans when you follow the easy directions.
