Where are the best places to apply as an entry level administrative assistant? What kinds of businesses/companies typically hire for this position?

Just about every company with over 10 employee's hire Administrative assistants.
There are lot's of good jobs, and lot's of not so good employer's.
If you want job security. Great Benefits, and a Retirement plan that is better than most. I would recommend you get busy finding a job working for the United States Government.
The Veterans Administration is always looking for Administrative Assistants. Not only for the Hospital end of their organization, but they have financial operations and just plain administration of all their programs.
If i knew what state you lived in or were interested in, i could send you some referrals and contacts with the fed's that perhaps you could use to find a great job.
I own a small company with a 5 year government contract, but presently i can handle all the paperwork/administrative duties myself. But, when i open another company location in Omaha, Nebraska later this year I'm going to have to hire one to handle all the administrative duties as i'll be too busy working in the field to do much in the line of administrative duties.

Big firms usually need lots of AA's; but also contact your local government (state government too, if you live near the capitol). In the long term, you are usually better off with a government job because most un-unionized firms can fire at will, and they also have a distressing tendency to go into bankruptcy, or go out of business, or downsize. But governments will always be with us, usually offer civil service protection, and have decent benefits programs.

Most professions have an admin assistant. Law, medical even police have admin's.
