The only difference is the velocity at which their knees hit the floor when Corporate America knocks. Basically there is very little difference, they serve the corps. The poor and working class really have no representation.

You're going to get alot of partisan nastiness, so as a Canadian, I'll try to explain.

Republicans are generally fiscally conservative and socially conservative. Not all Republicans are born again fundamentalists, no matter what the media would have you believe ,however the GOP has moved farther right in the past 30 years. The late Gerald R. Ford was a moderate Republican who saw his party being hijacked by right wing " Christian" meaning fundamentalist based politicians.

The Democrats are not the wild eyed leftist leaning crazies the GOP and Fox media and the like would let you believe.

Philosophically the Dems see themselves as the party of the working man and those who have been oppressed by big business. They are left compared to the right wing conservatism of the GOP at the moment that's very true.

However the Dems are the party who brought in the Voters Right Act and civil Rights Act in the sixties, the New Deal in the 30s during the Depression. They want to spend money to help give the working man and woman a better deal -as in getting health care , better schools etc.

The Conservatives have made the term " liberal" a dirty word, however because one is compassionate and sees a larger picture other than just the bottom line on a financial statement does not make Liberal a bad thing.

Most Democrats, like most GOP, probably lie somewhere in the middle and more moderate on the issues than either extreme.

Hope that clarifies things.

Philosophically and in the purest sense, the republicans have always been for personal rights and freedoms. The Democrats have been about big government and forcing everybody to comply with their beliefs.

In reality the republicans are about big business and helping fleece the public. The democrats are about moving this country to a socialist/fascist state. In both cases the public is losing because special interest groups own the politicians and we are lied to almost constantly by both sides of the isle.

Contrary to many other countries, there are only 2 political parties in the U.S. government. The Republican Party and the Democratic Party. Other parties do exist (namely the Independent Party), but persons belonging to these parties are generally not elected to public office, as their numbers are too low. The differences lie in their personal and professional beliefs as to how the United States should or should not be governed. A republican belongs to the Republican Party and a democrat to the Democratic Party.
