"playing the field" is a nice way of saying that someone gets around, is easy, loose, etc....it can be used in a sexual content or otherwise

It means dating around a lot with different people as opposed to dating one person steadiliy.

It might not involve sex, but the term sort of suggests a loose behavior and a general disregard for people's feelings (whether or not that's actually the case with any given individual).

play the field
to maintain an interest in a number of people or things, especially to become romantically or sexually involved with a number of partners:
Becky's not ready to settle down with one man - she enjoys playing the field too much.

This is usually applied to someone who's known to change personal partners on a fairly often basis.
However, it can also mean someone who's simply checking out various options before making a decision, and not necessarily sexually indiscriminate.
