How would I go about seeing it's real? It cuts glass, but I heard many objects (especially knock offs) can cut glass. If it's not real, it's a remarkable fake. Is there a way I can fnd out without going to a jeweler? should I appraise it? how?

You should take it to a jeweler or a professional insurance appraiser. The appraiser would most likely take it to a jeweler, anyway, though. You definitely shouldn't take it to a pawn shop, for example, since you can expect to be offered much less than its actual value whether it's real or costume.

Diamond is a carbon mineral with a hardness of 10 on the mohs scale. Basically its the hardest substance on earth, meaning nothing else will scratch it. I would get a piece of corundum and try to scratch the diamond. Be careful though because diamonds have cleavage planes which and be easially fractured if you apply too much force.
