i've used it on my pc's for a long time and I've never had a problem. The experts at the forum i frequent also love the product. (bleepingcomputer.com) Norton is ok if you wanna pay every year, but AVG is just as good plus as a bonus it's free..updates definitions every couple of days.
Who are you gonna trust? a level one that doesn't elaborate on his answers? or a level 6 that does?
To those AVG Free bashers, the question was if he could trust AVG to protect his computer. And the simple answer is YES. Sure it's not the best, but it's probably better than average and it's also Free. I don't feel like paying for the best AV program but trust myself to practice safe internet surfing / downloading / etc.

Whoa that dude that thinks Microsoft should be trusted must be out of his mind. I guess he's never heard of Internet Explorer, WGA, or the JPEG of doom. I would trust a crazy homeless man that shoves rotting food down his pants long before I would trust Microsoft. For a long time I was using the free Zonealarm Firewall and AVG antivirus along with a variety of other security things and I didn't have any trouble. I liked how AVG worked. If you need more security than the free version of AVG then there's a plethora of antivirus, firewall, anti spyware, anti adware, and anti malware products that you could be paying for. I suggest you try Zonealarm Security Suite. It's working out pretty well for me so far I haven't had any trouble but never trust one program to protect you from everything no matter how highly rated it is or how much you're paying for it. If money is a determining thing then you could easily find a crack or a serial number for whatever program you want if you really really wanted to break the law and use software for free however I'm not suggesting that you do so.

Well I cannot say anything about AVG but if you are looking for an effective and less resources consuming anti virus, I will recommend no other antivirus than Nod32. I've been using it for 2 years by now. It never created a problem for me quietly running in your taskbar at the right. It automatically updates itself and it is highly efficient in capturing viruses and other activities. It has even received 100% Virus bulletin award which is an open community. Information about them can be found at http://www.virusbtn.com/.
You can download fully working 30 day trial here

Hope it helps.

AVG came 8th in Anti-Virus Software Review's 10 antivirus programs for 2007. See comparison tables here:

I disagree with the person who said you only get viruses from p2p and torrenting sites. Not so - there was a recent one on MySpace which millions of people use. Yes they do use up RAM but in my opinion it is worth it. For a free antivirus, AVG is OK, I used it last year but am now using Avira AntiVir which I find better.

It's okay -- it's an 'active scan' product; the benefits are proactive antiviral protection. The cons are increased network i/o. There are passive scan freeware products available like clamav -- but you have to initiate or schedule a scan with those whereas avg tries to intervene on your behalf before the fact. They also do a fair amount of pattern research and indeed have had detection schemata online prior to the big 3 (Trend Micro, Symantec, McAffee) on several occasions.

Hi there,
To combat all these AVG fanboys, let me answer with some simple facts:
Looking at current protection ratings, AVG scores a lowly 90% protection against all known viruses, whilst Avast comes in at 92%. This means they are letting through roughly one in every ten viruses - pretty shocking.
This is proven in many independent tests around the internet as seen here:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
http://www.av-comparatives.org/

(thanks for the links JibberJabber)
Avoid at all costs.
If you would be interested in other Security products that are better than all of these, you should try either Prevx1, Kaspersky or F-Secure who all score over a 99% protection rating. Out of these three my recommendation would be Prevx1, as this is the quickest at protecting against new outbreaks of malware.

Best paid: NOD32 and Kaspersky. As a security expert, I would say both are a little complex for the average user. NOD32 is really lightweight and you will find your system will have more "snap" with NOD vs. any other AV.
AVG is my top choice for a free AV. It's pretty simple, effective and light on resources. AVG is only ever so slightly heavier on resources that NOD32.
P.S. Simpsons must not live on the same planet I do. LOL
Best regards,
Windsor

I personally think all antivirus software suck. Just don't use p2p programs like Limewire and Kazaa and dont use torrent downloading programs and you won't get any viruses. I mean, we are taught on the TV when a new virus comes through and Hotmail, Yahoo, Googlemail, they all use antivirus software to scan emails. In my opinion, antivirus software just a waste of RAM and a waste of money....unless its something that can be trusted. Although I don't like Windows Defender all the time, Windows is a trusted name in computers. Good luck.
