My 4 Month old has Acid Reflux and I have a hard time putting him on his tummy without him screaming in pain. Even If I put him down for a few minutes it bothers him, but my family is pressuring me saying that tummy time is so important for his development and he could be delayed if I don't put him on his belly. Has anyone had a child that developed just fine without tummy time?

Your child will develop just fine without "tummy time". I never took the time to do it with my two oldest (now 15 and 11) and both were sitting around 5 mos, and walking at 9. However my 6mos old is progressing much slower than the others and she did have tummy time, so go figure-every baby is different and progresses at their own pace. This is just another concept that some Dr. feels is important. Do not worry, I have yet to meet a toddler who cannot hold their head up because they were not given tummy time. Your child will be fine and actually will be better off without it, why cause undue suffering, keep him upright!

Tummy time is useful for a child to explore the world. When you are in pain, you are not interested in exploring the world. How does your family think he will learn while in pain? Don't they think pain will cause delays? They seem to have a problem with reality.

One of the most important things a baby does for you is force you to get strong and be able to tell people NO. I would not look to my family for parenting advice, if I were you.

In this case I would say tummy time that causes him pain would more likely be harmful to his development than giving him tummy time. Interacting with your child, etc. Will keep him from being delayed. Speak to your pediatrician and get his/her opinion, I am sure they will back up what you know in your heart that tummy time is causing more harm than good. Then you will be armed with the doctors words, you can tell your relatives that the doctor firmly believes he will not be delayed and that tummy time that causes him pain could be harmful.

Stand firm Mom, you know best!

Tummy time helps the baby develop those neck muscles and to explore his or hers surroundings. However, I would consult with your pediatriacian about this issue. If your baby is in pain from lying on his belly, tummy time really would not help! Good luck and allow your family to vent; And you and your doctor will figure out what is right for your baby!!

hi there. my son is now 11 months old...(didnt think about crawling until 9months, but now crawls everwhere.)i was lucky he didnt have reflux or any major sicknesses that young. However i always forgot to give him tummy time. The doctor said that he would be delayed but only because he was 4 weeks premi..no matter what you do a baby will learn things in their own time...ur baby may never want to crawl and may start to walk first instead. I strongly suggest to seek professional advice though.Talk to your doctor to see what they say..a baby in discomfort is an unhappy baby..the baby might not be in pain but just doesnt like his tummy time (that was the case with my son)

I do not know where this tummy time became so important. From what I have read, the worst position you can put a baby in is on his tummy. They should always be laid down on their back, and they move around after they are sleep to the position they like. I have four kids and all of them I laid down on their tummy but this was the wrong way. My kids are all older now. Do not allow people to tell you how to lay your baby, it is yours not theirs. I believed I read something pertaining to laying them of their stomach can cause a baby to stop breathing.
Well this is all I got, but just check some websites for better information. But do not lay him on his stomach.
You can also lay him on his side, just put a blanket on his back and his from to hold him in that position, just make sure that you keep eye contact with him to make sure he doesnt move too much and puts the little blanket around his face.

We had a hard time with tummy time too, we built up his neck by carrying him with him looking over our shoulders. I would also lay down with my legs bent, and had him kind of sit up in different positions over my legs. This worked wonders, his flat spot on the back of his head rounded out, it didn't hinder development because he walked at 9 months. Best of luck to you!

According to what I've read "tummy time" is important to a baby's development. You might try using a "boppy pillow" to make it easier for him to be on his tummy. This way he isn't flat on his tummy and that might make him feel a bit better, Otherwise, discuss it with your pediatrician, that's what you pay them for. :) Good Luck!
