Hi there,

Some of the most recommended programs on here always seem to be AVG or Avast - although this is likely to be because they are free? Looking at current protection ratings, AVG scores a lowly 90% protection against all known viruses, whilst Avast comes in at 92%. This means they are letting through one in every ten viruses - pretty shocking.

The same goes for Spybot and Adaware. In fact if you had AVG, Spybot and Adaware installed, you would surprisingly only be protected from circa 60% of all known malware (viruses, adware, spyware, trojans, etc).

Norton and McAfee are the "best known" security products, which are currently protecting against something like 98.3% and 97% of all known viruses - a much better score. However, both of these are known for being very heavy programs which can tend to slow down certain machines. If you are thinking of installing either of these I would definitely recommend you download their free trial to check it does not affect your machine in this way prior to opening your wallet.

If you would be interested in other Security products that are better than all of these, you should try either Prevx1, Kaspersky or F-Secure who all score over a 99% protection rating. Out of these three my recommendation would be Prevx1, as this is the quickest at protecting against new outbreaks of malware.

Avast offers a very good home product for free on their web site. You do need to register with an e-mail address to get the registration code. It has 7 different apps including anti-virus, peer to peer protection etc. I have installed it on my son's computer and he has never has anything go wrong with it again.

I can see you have recived many very good answers but i still would like to give you my knowledge and expireince and let you in on some facts. and some opinions, disregard norton system works as being a good over all it has antivirus, and system clean up features but does not have spyware, firewalls etc.. personally i would not recomend a all in one . i run Norton antivirus 2004 pro or above versions, and I run Zonealarm Pro the norton gives me great protection on viruses. and zone alarm pro version is the best firewall you can get and same time the easiest most user friendly you can get there is a free version and a pro version the pro version has the same exact firewall protection as the free version but also has built in spy ware scan/removal and handles mine fine. now let me try and make things a little more simple for you to understand on security and what to look out for.
1. antivirus is like locking your front door on the house but leaving all the windows and back door open .
so your front door is locked with antivirus good first step.
2. firewall (zone alarm recomended strongly..) this has many different security level setting from low medium to high , i keep mine on high for a lil while after installing every time you go to do anthing it will ask you for permission if you have doubht there is a advice from zonelabs tab, but in doubht click no if doesnt effect you then the next time u do something it asks for permision click no and click remember this answer , and you have just knocked that one in the head., now progarms used like yahoo, hotmail, messnger, etc.. click yes and remember the answer, you can always go in and change it. later in your zonealrm window. click perfernces and so on.. and the spyware protection is pretty descent as well, many spyware programs are of no harm to you at all such as tracking cookies etc.. most these are cookies set on the wensites to track the useage of what ever link etc most to act as a survery in example telling the website folks what you like. /dislike advrtsiement.. and many are serious . but your firewall in example will block alot of soyware related items, so step 2 is completed got all back doors closed/locked and windows secured with a securty gurad at each one asking whom is it whom do you wish to see go away before i shoot. hehe..

3. how often do you see on emails has been scanned by such such antivirus and found virus free? always huh. Yahoo mail uses Norton antivirus while some others may use avg or mcafee they all are pretty much safe to use, but i have had very good expireices with the two items mentioned norton anbtivirs and Zone alarm pro firewall .

and final the way you surf the web controls alot of spyware type viruses adware malware etc.. will find alot these in porn stuff etc.. stay away from that stuff. its dangerous, then 2nd be careful on your mail dont know the sender and just dont seem to real mark it as spam , and delete unknown names etc.. this has just reduced your risk greatly. .. hope this was helpful and you can find alot of these downloads available on the authors website and on www.majorgeeks.com i use that site alot and its safe . you can read differnt user reviews and comments there also.. best of luck and god bless. hope i was of help and hopefullly i can help again sometimes if possible..

Zone alarm is good. Not only protects your network from hackers but also provides you with good anti-virus security.

McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007
McAfee bills VirusScan Plus 2007 as its three-in-one security solution--antivirus, firewall, and antispyware--and we found that it does even more. Included within are system diagnostic tools to shred deleted files and defragment your hard drive; various network monitoring tools; and McAfee's own antisphishing tool, SiteAdvisor.
