If the hard drive is fresh, then when you load the XP disk on boot, it'll ask you about partitions, or at least it should because it'll partition the drive and then install XP. Are you trying to do dual boot? If so, just partition the drive to what you think is enough and then when XP is installed, install the other OS in XP on that side of the partition.

At start up press whatever key to access the bios and set it to try to boot from CD first. Pop the CD in the player and restart your computer. The windows partition manager will come up. With partitions it really doesn't matter. Unless you want a dual boot system then just partition the drive to the size of the max space of the hard drive then format and install.

As I remember it the XP installer allows you to partition and format the drive as part of the installation process.

Alternatively, if you are adding this disk to an existing system, put the new disk in as a secondary (slave) drive, use the OS of the primary drive to partition & format it and then use partition magic or similar tool to copy the partition(s) off the old disk onto the new one - that way you avoid having to reinstall all your applications and patches and customisations... and you get to keep the old drive as a backup.

You'll need to mark the 'XP' partition of the new disk as active before it will boot.

During the installation process when loading from the CD, it will ask how you want the drive partitioned. Then it will create the partition and format it for you.

If it is the only drive you are using on your computer then you need to create partitions by specifying size of each partition in the unpartitioned space, If there is single partition then you have to delete it to turn it into unpartitioned space before you can repartition it.
