Actually, I've had this experience and it wasn't as big a deal as you might imagine. The first time it occurred to me that my child was gay, she was five years old, so by the time she finally got around to telling me at 18, my reaction was "uh huh." I had gotten used to the idea long ago. I was glad she felt ok to tell me. I think she was a little disappointed that there wasn't a bigger reaction--some of her friends had huge dramas with their families. Since then, I've seen parents throw their kids out of the house, not go to their high school graduation, not speak to their kids--all kinds of foolishness! You can't take that kind of idiocy back, no matter what. If you're a parent having difficulty adjusting to the news that your child is gay, don't overreact or do something you'll regret later. Give them as much love and support as you can, and give yourself time to get used to things--that way you won't lose your precious relationship with them during the process.
If you watch a child grow up, and you see how things are with them when they're very small, it lets you know that this is not some choice they made. Whatever makes people gay, it happens when they're very young and choice does not seem to be involved. Having seen this up close, I see that it's not as big a deal as our society makes it out to be. If you love your child, and most people do, you'll eventually accept them for who they are. And if you can get to the point of celebrating who they are, that would be nice! All kids deserve that from their parents.

Love and support them. It's your child. Any parent that would turn their back on their kid because they were gay is sh*t.

Try to be as understanding as possible. I mean to say, that if it were in the least bit akward for me to hear...well just think how hard it would be for him or her to say. Of course I would always love my children very much.

I will accept my kid as gay or lesbian. It is your biological blood anyway. Sooner or later you have to accept them.

I would help and support them in any way I could. It's their choice and I would totally stand behind them in that choice.
