I have a 250 Meg portable hard drive which I have used as a master and to backup all my files to which is no longer being recognised by my computer. I had tried it on several computers with the same results. Is there anywhere or any software program that would allow me to access the hard drive and retrieve my files?

It is quite likely that the drive is busted. Call the manufactorer and explian your issues maybe they can retrieve the info off of the hard discs since. Since its not being recognized by your computer odds are the actual disc inside is ok. Other than that I dont think you can do much once the drive dies. I hope it works out for you. I lost tons of pictures with a similar problem.

Depending on warranty and the value of the data, you have a few options.

1. If under warranty, go to the vendor (ie, LaCie) and see what they suggest. Most vendors will check the external drive unit and repair it, if it is the enclosure that is the problem. In the event that the actual hard drive is the problem, they usually will allow you to take it to a data recovery lab for a recovery, then will replace the drive when you return it to them.

2. If not under warranty, pop the hood of the enclosure and try connecting the drive directly to your computer or in another working enclosure. If the drive detects, great! You found the problem. If not, you'll probably need professional data recovery assistance.

With regards to data recovery, the question you need to ask yourself is,"how much is the data worth to me?" If it is worth $500 or more, it is well worth sending the drive in and getting the free assessment provided by most labs. (I know this, as this is what I do for a living.)

Good luck!

The master hard drive should carry the OS usually at C:
Go to Device manager and find out whether the Hard disk is installed/ connected.

You can usually get into a hard drive with a screwdriver. It can wreck the equipment though if you touch anything inside.

Check the hardware connections and properties. If it shows that 'the device is not working properly' call the administrator.

You could probably take it to the vendor. They can help you in trying to retrieve most of your data or if you are lucky all your data.
