I'm assuming you want to record movie files from your VHS on your computer.
I did this recently for my girlfriend's mother (what a good son in law I am) and used this device. http://www.adstech.co.uk/shop/item.asp?itemid=13
It comes with simple, easy to use software that allows you to save in various formats - you need to be careful with that as the file size can go through the roof otherwise and you'll end up with no disc space. Once saved on my PC, I was then able to burn the files onto DVDs as DiVX Avi files and watch them on a DVD player using my TV or just on the computer screen.
If this is indeed what you are looking to do, ie. digitally archive your video / camcorder collection, then you need to buy a device such as the one at the link above - it cost me 60€ which is not much given that i now have a whole load of new films that I've been able to copy from my gf's mum's video collection!
Hope this helps - the device comes with all the cables you need and plugs into your PC via the USB port.
When you buy the device, you'll also have to buy this for about 5€ : http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=28831&doy=10m1&C=SEO&U=strat15
Explain to anyone in an electronics shop what it is you're doing and they'll show you exactly the connector that you need.
This may seem complicated but in reality it's very easy even if you're not technically minded and it can be set up and you can be recording on your PC within 5 minutes of arriving home with the device.

You need a video-in connector on your computer. Most tv-cards have it and some video cards do too. Then you need a SCART cable that splits into 3 cinch cables (2 for audio and one for video). If you want to record the audio too, you'll need a converter from cinch to jack and plug that one into your line-in connector on your sound card.

The above reply ignores the fact that it's a MacBook in use, which is actually quite important! Have a look at Pinnacle Video Capture for Mac, link to a review below.
