I've never understood. is it a prison? a mental institution? some hotel where all the crazies hang out? (all have been suggested to me) or is it something completely different? It bugs me every time i hear it!

I think it is about a social trap. The hotel offers everything the musicians could ever dream of but once they realize that it is a trap they want to escape. If you grew up during the 70's like me you would understand what mirrors on the ceiling means. During the 70's and 80's cocaine was used frequently by musicians and people that liked to party. Which means if you could afford it you could party for several days in a row. Now if you combine unlimited women and wine with the equation you can begin to understand their madness. I am not an advocate of cocaine use but I think it is what the song is about. At least that is the way I understood it. By the way I have all of the Eagles old Cd's and I like their style of music even the new stuff. It is quite obvious that they came to their senses early because they survived.

Hmm? superb Vinyl series you have there. advantageous to work out you have that for the time of a Mint circumstance. Have a sturdy one.

The song really isn't about anything according to Glenn Frey. His quote from a radio interview a few years back was: “we were listening to a lot of Steely Dan records at the time and were impressed with the way that they could make ‘junk sculpture' lyrics about nothing and make them work into a song.”
The song is a great narrative tale about decadence (pink champagne) and mysticism (a spooky dungeon-like house) and even botany (the smell of colitus!), but it certainly has no realm in fact.
Don Felder brought the rough guitar track to Henley/Frey and asked them if they could do anything with it. This is unusual in that songs by them were typically written the other way around. It serves as an interesting note that further proves that they did some serious ad-libbing and probably got the booze and drugs flowing before they wrote this song.
The album on the whole is all about the southern California lifestyle at that time (Life In The Fast Lane, Last Resort) and shouldn't be looked at in any other way.

I think this song is about addiction and drugs.
"Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way " That's not a candle she's lighting up.
"Some dance to remember, some dance to forget" Some people do them do remember good memories, some people do them to forget bad memories.
'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device" That is basically what drug users are
"The stab it with their steely knives But they just can't kill the beast" The beast being the addiction/
"You can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave!" You can always say you aren't addicted or that you can quit anytime you want, but you'll always end up going back to them.
Pretty basic clear meaning, there are other metaphors in there to decipher but that's the basics.
Thats what i think anyway!

"The real Hotel California is not a place; it is a metaphor for the west coast music industry and its effect on the talented but unworldy musicians who find themselves ensnared in its glittering web."
There's a great article on Snopes which explains all of the weird theories people have had about this song.

Its a song about a rock star who gets what he wants when he wants it no matter what. If he doesnt like the hotel he tears out the walls and changes it. Whereever he goes he does what he wants with no regard for others.
