Desktop shortcuts are a waste of time and RAM memory, especially when you have so many you have trouble finding the one you want!
As long as the icon is a shortcut you can delete it without affecting the program; it will still be available from the Start - programs list. And you can put that in alphabetical order by right clicking on an empty area of the list and clicking sort by - alphabetical.
You can right click on any desktop shortcut and click delete, and you get a box come up saying 'are you sure you want to delete the shortcut, it won't remove the program' so you know its just the shortcut. If its not you can cancel or get it out of the recycling bin. If theres no start menu shortcut you can click 'send to start menu' instead of deleting it.
If your icons are in folders you'll have to double click on the right folder, then double click on the icon to start the program. And thats no quicker than clicking Start - programs and clicking the icon!

Hi there. I am guessing when you say that there are 41 different catagories, that there are 41 different icons on your desktop. If so, if you want to remove them but not entirely deleting them, you can create a folder either on desktop or on the hard drive (eg. c:\Removed Icons\), select the icons you wanted removed, and drag/cut them into that folder
Note: If you accidently deleted an icon, you can either recover it from the recycling bin or just going to that program folder and right-clicking on the exe file, and selecting Send to ... / Desktop (create shortcut)
Hope this helps!

If the icons have a little arrow on them, they are shortcuts to programs or documents. You can delete them and this will not remove the progam or document they are pointing to. If you wanted the icon back you could always right click, select new shortcut and put these back at any time. If they do not have an arrow they are original programs or documents if you delete these they will be sent to the recylce pin. You could right click, create a new folder and call it Icons then cut and paste all the icons into this folder.

take your file manager and
search one of the icons on your main harddisk
where your operation system is installed
to find out where the folder is where the icons are positioned
you can also search for the folder "desktop" which is probably the place
what you are looking for
then create another folder with your file manager
where you want to put the icons which you don't want to use
then select and cut out the icons from the folder desktop which you don't want to use
and insert them in the other folder what you just have created

Just right click 'em & select delete; this removes the icons but not the programs. You might also want to consider creating new folders on your desktop for various categories of program & dragging the icons into there. I've got one called "maintenance" that holds all my anti-virus, anti-spyware, disk cleanup etc . . .
Saves clutter on the desktop.

I would put most of those icons in a folder on your desktop and just leave the ones which you use every day.

Like ''John'' said, make folders for the separate icons. I have a folder for shortcuts and a folder for programs.
