In Schumacher's case, he finished second, but it was Ferrari's refusal to renew his contract and plump for Kimi Raikkonen that forced him to leave the circus.
Yet, for a man who leaves behind several controversies in a chequered career, the last act of 'parking' his Prancing Horse during qualifying at Monte Carlo will forever remain etched in memory. All the same, Formula One can never be the same without Schumacher - good, bad or ugly?

I think it's very unlikely Schumacher was forced out. If he wanted to continue driving in F1, he had standing offers from a number of other teams: Renault were quite open about wanting him, and BMW was very clear that he could basically name whatever price he wanted, however many zeros on the end, and they'd pay! Which means you then have a situation where he wanted to still drive, but was only willing to do so at Ferrari. And if that were true, and Ferrari wanted him out to make room for Kimi (unlikely since Kimi was under contract regardless of whether Michael stayed or left), then all Michael would have to have done was have said so in the press, and public pressure in Italy would have assured his return.

So what you really have is a driver that has accomplished every meaningful mark in the sport, reaching a point in time where he is wondering if he wants to continue. And it seems like he was very much on the fence... but he didn't want to go outside of Ferrari as this was "his team" - based on his own comments throughout the year. He also knew Kimi would be on the team in 2007, so his staying would impact Felipe Massa, and the two seem to have become friends. Though I don't think this was a major issue.

Michael would have been aware of many of the other changes coming to Ferrari... the status of Brawn, Todt, and Stepney being key! I think he probably realized that "his team" wouldn't be the same team, and that continuing on for even one more season would require a major recommitment on his part (which would also come at the cost of Massa's job). At the end of the day, it just seemed like a good time to step away while still able to drive as he had through his career.

The sport probably won't be same; though as much due to the changing nature of F1 as for his departure.

I think he left because he felt he had reached his best, with amazing achievements , & didn't want to fade away grasping onto the glory days like Damon Hill ,etc. He basically quit whilst still at the top of his game Granted he lost the 2006 WDC but it was close & exciting, however 2005 WDC was basically handed to Alonso due to FIA yet again trying to stop ferrari & schumacher's dominance of the sport. Why were the rules of F1 changed so much between 2002 & now.
Relating that to football would be like the FA changing the rules in such a way that would hurt a team like Chelsea the most allowing other teams to beat them.
Also why do so many people harp on about Schumacher's chequered career, when "the great senna" & prost blatantly rammed each other off to win WDC, & nothing is ever said about that.

The fact is that Schumacher retired for he see he was getting too old, he turned 38 on January 3rd and it was time that he let the younger drivers to get a chance.

No matter what people think of Schumacher, he will never be fergotten and it will take a really long time before another driver will beat his records.

The sport will never be the same without Schumi. No matter how irritating it may be that he wins everything, we will miss the conspiracy theories, news about favoritism, and all those complaints by other teams. No doubt about it... he really is THE legend in F1.

Its also good for the sport that he is retiring. The sport will now be infused with new blood, new talent, giving the other drivers a chance to shine.

Now its Kimi and Massa's year! Go Ferrari!

His Contract renerwal was never the issue. What was happening was that if you empirically compare M.S times after factoring car modifications he had lost tenth's of seconds over the last three years which could quite a bit of difference in F1. Secondly he was making more mistakes, Finally the younger drivers were more fitter, better motivated, were threatning to outrace him. Case in Point , Kimi, Alonso, Massa, Kubica.
The clincher is that Media Scrutiny has intensified over the last 5 years and the reporters ties with F1 were also loose unlike some of the famous reporters who made a name out of F1 reporting. Reputations didn't bother them and they were asking a lot of questions.
Under these circumstances M.S decided on the best course possible.

He did it all. Hey, it is a risky business. There is nothing more for him. He had money, he had fun... Now he is a parent, so he does not want to risk it anymore. By the way, Ferrari offered him a contract WITHOUT due date. (AKA: Stay with us until you wanted to quit) Besides, he left when he was at the top of his career. One question then.... He said: I want to be remembered as the best. This is it. :)

I think no not because of that reason ... He left because he had a huge records kept by him and a 15 year carrier has to end some how ... I think that what you said is not true ... I read in an article that he told the reporters that he is going to leave his carrier during August itself ... So i think the renew of his new contact would not be the reason .. I think it will surely be bad ...

schumacher leaving f1 is not anything too big. what has to hurt more is losing montoya to nascar at the same time. ande if you really want to know just how good he is look what happened when f1 made all the cars more equal. ferrari has not been able to win much in the last couple of seasons.

I have not watched much about F1 over the course of the last 6 months, and it saddens me that he is retiring... I really want him to drive again... hopefully, one day he will. He is the best ever - maybe he could jump to another circuit... win the Indy 500 or NASCAR (to prove the critics wrong).

Maybe they did....but the torch has to be passed sometime. I think Schumi had his time in the spotlight. His stats rival those of the great Aryton Senna. I look forward to the new season. I think it will be a toss up between drivers and machines. We'll see what happens with Alonso now at McLaren. Inferior equipment the last couple of seasons. Let's see what he can do with that now.

GO FERNANDO!!!!
