Importance and Effectiveness of Product and Service Design?

I'm not sure what u mean by service design,
but since I've trained as an industrial (product) designer,
I can tell u that sure, there's no need for anymore chairs or
door stoppers in the world; but that seems to be the
"side effect" of the innovation process.
what I mean is, that this is the price we pay for
occasionally having new inventions come into the world;
where in the past inventors where rare and considered crazy,
these days anyone can become a designer but it is worth it for the new technologies and products that people come up with.
plus, it makes the world a much prettier place...
