A backward looking people, who have never fully recovered from the admitted injustices of the Treaty of Trianon.

Until they accept that they won't ever get "their" lost lands back, they will always have politicians who prey on nationalistic jingoism.

Crap beer
Passable wine
Unable to queue in an orderly fashion
Primitive health service
Awful roads and drivers
Heavy food
I could go on, but won't...

There are far worse places to live, but the dwelling on the past really bugs me.

I haven't met many Hungarians, but I know quite a bit about Hungary and the classical-musical culture of Hungary especially.

It is a very fertile country, with gorgeous towns and villages, and for anyone who wants to see "old" Europe before it is swept away; possibly the best place to go.

They have fine railways, some excellent food and of course, for the discerning, Tokai sweet-wine (related to Sauterne).

My academic brother tells me that Hungarian academics are very clever, and I think Hungary has more Nobel prizes awarded to it than any other European country.

Musically, it is rich, with magnificent folk-music, and famous classical composers such as Liszt and Kodaly.

Hungary seems to be a very civilised place, and someday I shall travel there.......but hopefully, with someone who can speak the language.

i've been to hungary once and stayed in budapest and out in the country and i realy enjoyed it, esp the hot spa's, there was something very surreal about being in an outdoor pool in jan! All the hungarians i met were very nice but the language barrier was a tough one as hungarian is not the easiest of languages to pick up i found though that as i have some basic german we were able to communicate a little easier.

Very nice place, friendly people, cheap booze (I don't drink), too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter so spring or autumn is the best time to go (but if you like hot summers then go there in the summer). Those that can speak english will be very keen to speak to you and will be ready to help if you get lost. Food is fantastic (but fattening) the cakes and desserts are brilliant and there are lots of spas that are very beneficial for your skin, bones and other problems you may have. When you go there, don't forget to sample the local boys! :-)

If they are hungry then we should give them food.
