If you don't have GPRS in your area or just don't want to use it, you can still access the internet via CSD depending on your carrier. Some carriers have it on all the time, and it's free just coming out of your package minutes (as opposed to a per kb charge with GPRS), some charge monthly for it, and some don't even have it at all anymore. Data speeds with CSD are 9k6 so it's very slow compared to GPRS. Of course you can still use the cable connection to do other stuff like transfer ringtones and MP3's to and from your phone, back up contacts, etc.
