Anything that is 1200 to 1400 degrees F will give off light that appears to be red. Molten lava is usually at least that hot, really fresh at the volcano it will often be so hot as to appear white rather than red, but the coolest part you can see radiation from will be red as that is the lowest temperature you can see.
Long after it is no longer red it will still have enough heat radiation that you can still feel it on the side of you face or hand, even from a distance, that is just like the red color, but longer waves than you can see, which is why you can still feel it.
When cold it is usually black, but even hot enough to burn you badly it still looks black.
