One aspect:
Morpheus decided to die rather than change or quit his job as the Dream King rather than merely quit like his brother did, Destruction. In the story, even Lucifer was able to give up Hell.
Second aspect:
Morpeus killed his son Orpheus (at Orpheus's request) with the knowledge that the Furies (oh so soory, I mean the kindly ones) will punish him for it. Morpheus had the choice to merely keep running from them, but in the end he chose to let them kill him.
