The only way to know a turtle's age for sure- watch it hatch out. You can count the rings on the belly scales for a rough guideline. It is NOT accurate, but good enough for most purposes.
Red-ears generally live for 5-10 years with decent care, 20-40 years with good care, and with the terrible care guidelines many people use, they often don't live past a year.

If Kept in captivity their life span is usually around 30 years. If not in captivity about 50.

Well they will live a long healthy life if they are well taken care of...and you can usually tell their age by the lines on the shell.
