I worked in one film making company. In 1997 there was one shooting and for that shooting one fish tank was bought with 8 goldfish, after shooting was complete director told me that I can take this goldfish tank. I bring them to my home but I don't know anything about goldfish. One week later one goldfish died and very soon another died, likewise all 7 of them died continuously but one remain still alive. I don't even know whether this fish is male or female. I only go to pet store to buy food for this fish. This fish is red in color (little white on tail) I don't change water weekly; I just change 100% water once in a month and clean his tank. Now, it's been 9 years but he is still alive and seems happy, I was just wondering to know about their life span. How long this fish is going to live?
Thank you!

Goldfish have been known to live into their 30's at least. Life expectancies from 10-20 years are normal for well cared for fish. The oldest captive goldfish on record was Tish who is in the Guiness Book of World Records. His owner, Peter Hand of England, won him at the fair in 1956. Tish died the first week of August, 1999 so he was at least 43 years old (probably 44 since most carnival goldfish are about 4 months to a year old). Tish only grew to 4.5 inches long and was silver. Since 4.5 inches is not that long, either Tish was stunted (he spent many years in small bowls before moving into a tank), or he was a fancy variety of goldfish. Peter Hand's mother, Hilda Hand, said after Tish's death, "I am very sad....Over the years we have become very close and I could sense if he was happy or not." The oldest living goldfish is also in England. As of 2003, "Goldie" is also 43 years old and will be in the next edition of Guiness.

The common varieties can live well over 25 years, while the fancy goldfish should live about 15 years. My own goldfish are 14 years old.

They can actually live 12-15 years in certain conditions. I bought an aquarium for my son on his 1st birthday and bought some feeder goldfish to keep in the tank until the water was stabilzed - everything else we put into the tank died or were eaten by the goldfish!

Needless to say they are still alive!

Depends on the species actually. Some species such as Koi which are goldfish live many many years. Some Koi have live over 200 years. There is also record of the more traditional goldfish that lived for 43 years.

I think I've heard of a common goldfish living to be 46. Look it up I think its in a record book somewhere. Or google oldest goldfish. As long as its fed and the water is clean he should live to about 15 or more.

In optimal conditions, goldfish may live more than 20 years (the world record is 49 years); however, most household goldfish generally only live six to eight years due to them often being kept in bowls

There is a man in Chinatown in Philadelphia that breeds ornamental carp aka goldfish. He has some that are in their late teens and still going strong.
