I can see that I live my life this way and I hear wiser people talk about life actually not being like that, but how do you change such a fundamental paradigm? It seems like to do that I would have to rewrite my life, my motives, and my dreams...and I like the way I am, sort of...see even now it's the way I am, verses the possibility of enlightenment.

When you start asking questions like that, you are hovering around the rabbit hole. It's up to you if you want to jump in and find out how deep the rabbit hole really is. I did. It led me to psychology, anthropology, zen philosophy, ancient history and how it relates to current events, some quantum physics, and so much more and did a lot of self analysis. I found out that what I was looking for was the natural self. If you watched the movie "the matrix", that is an analogy of how we all think. The matrix in the movie is what culture is to us. A program running in our minds. It's also what a psychology icon named Carl Jung called the "collective sub-concious". You have to understand what culture is before you can think beyond it and find yourself. Your natural self. When you do your research you will find ideas that will only guide you but the answer is for you to find out for yourself. Like what Morphius said to Neo, "I can only lead you to the door, you will have to open it yourself." In an anecdote about Zen, a student asked his master, "What is the first principle in Zen?" The master answered, "If I tell you what the first principle is, it will become the second principle".

It's a lot of thinking and hard work. Took me more than 20 years before connecting the dots. But the reward makes it all worthwhile.

should you pursue this quest here are some documentaries that might help:

1. The Real Eve @ Discovery.com

2. What the "Bleep" Do We Know @ amazon.com might have it.

Or you can take the blue pill (from "the matix") and just keep believing. Ignorance is bliss...from a certain point of view.

A good way to start is by surrounding yourself with good people. Most (read: ALL) people tend to act like those around them, so if you're hanging out with people who hate work, hate their boss, want revenge on their ex gf, etc., you are most likely going to develop those feelings. On the other hand, if you are around people who honestly help others and who don't gossip and are for the most part optimistic, you inherit those traits therefore making the transition to a higher path a much smother transition. You will start thinking like that even when you are not right in front of your friends, allowing you to make more productive, life affirming decisions.

The Bhagavad Gita introduces 3 yogas: Karma (artwork, which initially meant being meticulous approximately ritual observances, no longer artwork in maximum situations), Bhakti (devotionalims) and Jnana (expertise-searching for--the word is on the subject remember of the Latin word Gnosis). it is considered an more advantageous form of yoga and not for "all and sundry" because of the fact it involves discriminating between the "real" and "unreal" and getting a grip on what actuality relatively is. psychological and perceptual attempt is needed. Advaita Vedanta (of Shankaracharya) is relatively synonymous with Jnana yoga. The Bhagavad Gita could properly be interpreted from an advaita viewpoint or dvaita (that's on the subject remember of the Krishna expertise present day of Vedanta).

Unless you're a career criminal, your "fundamental paradigm" doesn't have to change.

You are who you are. You have to do what you feel is right in your heart and gut. You know what's right for you, no one else does.
