There is no bill on the table in Maine that would do what you're saying. If you actually read the news, you would know that the Bangor City Council recently passed an ordinance that will prohibit smoking in vehicles when there are children present. The fine will be $50.

It is a good ordinance because secondhand smoke is not healthy, especially more so in a confined area such as a vehicle. Children are at the mercy of adults and should not be subjected to such harmful behavior.

As for the argument that the ordinance violates the right to privacy, it does not, not anymore than punching someone in your own car. The government has the right to regulate behavior on public roads. There is no expectation of privacy when you're smoking in plain view of everyone.

Yeah...they are so worried about second hand smoke...but why don't they reconsider abortion and alternative life style issues. Hey, I do agree about the smoking, but that is a most definite infringements on our civil rights. NO CAN DO. It's called the Right to Privacy...and in my car...it's private. Of course my kids are grown, so the problem isn't mine.

I guess it's a considerate thought, but if you smoke around your kids in general, not doing it in the car is not going to make any difference.

If it passes, it will probably be more enforced than the 17 year old driving alone or with frineds & smoking.
These laws kill me because while cigg smoking is not good, obesity kills many more people yet we don't make laws that fine parents for allowing their kids to become obese .... We don't have laws against all-u-can eats restruants, eating while driving, etc.

you know, the same people who get up in arms about it have no problems driving an SUV and burning a fireplace, but as soon as you light up a cigarette, they get all fussy. next time i 'll lite up a crack pipe, and see what they think. common people.. I'm not blowing it in your face or sitting next to you. to get to the point, if I'm doing it in the house, the car does not make a difference (and i always smoke on the patio anyways)

Well no smoking in public places, bars, restaurants, and pubs, I guess your own car is next, before you can't smoke in your own home.

Think about it: 1st. ur car , then ur home, then ur self.then u have no rights whats so ever. people are blind to the fact that take-ing ones freedom of choice away because some else thinks it is their right to choose for u ?

great idea. maybe we would have less cigarette smokers in the long run b/c kids will not be exposed to them as much. besides, don't their lungs deserve to get free clean air too.
