i installed a hot water tank in my garage and the pilot light kept going out. after i replaced the thermo couple it still kept going out...turns out the brand new tank had a bad gas valve on it and i had to replace this...so it could be a number of things have a professional check it out

Sounds like your thermocoupler is dying. It keeps the pilot light on as long as IT stays warm, which is done by the pilot light. If the pilot goes out, the thermocoupler gets cool, and shuts off. It's to keep the gas shut off in the event that the pilot light goes out so you don't end up with a house full of methane and blow the place up. I suggest contacting a reputable repairman.

You are either low on gas or you are getting air or water in your line. Is it natural gas or propane. if natural gas, there may be a small leak between your meter and the furnace underground causing moisture or air to enter line. if propane, you might be low on gas. Could be what Dances with Wolves says also. i agree with her to find a repair man if my easy fixes don't help.

With any type of gas problems its best to contact you local gas provider, they will come out at no charge and tell you the problem.
