A hatchback has the rear windscreen as part of a door to the luggage compartment at the back of the car. The luggage compartment is also part of the same space as the passenger cabin, separated only by a hinged shelf called the parcel shelf.

A saloon has a separate luggage compartment called the boot. The boot has its own door, and unlike hatchbacks, the rear windscreen is fixed.
