When you remove Norton do not forget to put the Windows firewall back as the default fire wall, if you have the complete Norton "Internet Security " set up , and of cause put back AVG like all the others say, it works very well , I have put it on 5 of my friends computers and never had any problems.

AVG is good but make sure you remove every bit of Norton as it leaves lots of hidden files which can screw up your computer when you load AVG.
I have used both and found the free version of AVG to be adequate for purpose. My concern was that it appears to originate from Russia so wouldn't it be a good way to screw up the west's computers etc if it got into the wrong hands?
Just my paranioa coming through!!

Avg from Grisoft, or Avast which is also free, its personal preference to the user, but just a quick note to all you Norton Antivirus lovers!....Norton Antivirus uses 75% of your computers resources!!, so a system running Windows Xp, and 256mb ram (BTW...Windows XP needs a minimum of 256mb to run smoothly) and Norton will be running very very slow!.... its also the most hacked piece of antivirus there is on the market!

Team AVG Antivirus with Adaware (www.lavasoft.com Spyware removal NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH ANTIVIRUS, SPYWARE IS A DIFFERENT TYPE OF INFECTION) and your system should be running sweet!

AVG, my boyfriend works as the head of IT for Orange, and he told me to put it on my computer, and I have had no problems. Just remember to check for updates, and do a system scan every now and then. Also get the Yahoo tool bar for their anti-spyware software. You can get rid of pop ups too! :0) Have fun & good luck.

Definitely AVG Anti-Virus and AVG Spyware - it is free. Go to Windows Catalogue. You will find it there. I had PC-cillin - a South African program. Slowed down my pc (work pc - quite old).
I uninstalled it and installed the AVG and I have NO problems. It doe snot slow down your pc at all. Good luck

I have to agree with just about everyone else here and say AVG, which I have used for some time now, however, you can also check out http://www.download.com which has lots of other freeware as well as AVG.
