I own a 1974 Chevy pickup with the 350 of course. Its 4wd and lifted. It just makes a hard kick when I shift into D and when I shift into reverse it takes almost 2 seconds before it will change into reverse...from park or drive. Any idea's?....and price to fix if real seriouse?

You have a bad u joint. I bet he truck has a vibration as you drive down the road too. Hope I have been helpful

Your looking at your transmission starting to go bad, pretty soon it will be more than 2 seconds before it goes into each gear. If this car is your "baby" and you love it, then it may be worth fixing. If its your only car, that you use to get from A to B, then your better off getting a new car. Transmission = $$$$.

How does the fluid look, nice and red, or is it brown and smells burned? Has it ever been changed?

Find a local ATRA certified shop and have the transmission repaired. Do not go to a tranny store like AAMCO or MrTransmission.

Very first thing is to check your transmission fluid.

DO NOT let a mechanic examine the car until the fluid is right.

BTW - is your idle speed correct?

It's either your torque converter or modulator going out. You DON'T need an entire new transmission to fix your problem.
