why did they not trust bar owners to decide if they wanted smoking or not? We could have had smoking bars and non-smoking bars and everyone would have been happy.

America is rampant with people whose motto should be "do as I say, not as I do". Tied to a government that wants to 'nanny' it's citizens from cradle to grave and the result is abolition of individual freedom.
The research done on tobacco looks good until one takes the time to find out that the results were pre-ordained and the research was taylor-made to fit the results, which are completely incorrect any way you look at it.
Smoking MAY be linked to cancer and emphysema but the results are far from definite. Since there was no way to explain how those who have never smoked and were never around tobacco smoke contract the same cancers and emphysema as smokers, they came up with the "second-hand smoke" theory... only the numbers were obviously vastly incorrect and had to be changed.
It's all a control measure. Even now, those who were never around smoke still get the same diseases and conditions as smokers without any viable explanation as to why if someone doesn't smoke they are just as likely to die from the same things as smokers.
Every maladay that befalls humans has been blamed on smoking even congenital heart problems. Fact is, everyone dies from SOMETHING and it is just handy to blame all except violent death on smoking. It's wrong but it makes good soundbites.

Tobacco smoke may be harmful but certainly not to the degree being stated but it is FAR less harmful than automobile exhaust and the stuff pouring out of factories. Odd that these 'do-gooders' who demand others abide by *their* choices continue to do worse things. It's called hypocracy.

When the government has the ability to order businesses to prohibit legal activities within it's establishment, there is NO freedom. It will continue until the government has control over every citizens every activity. And all this time we thought Communism was bad....

Hey, people should get it by NOW, for cripes sake. Bar's and smoking have always gone together. If the people want to stay away from smoking....DON'T GO TO THE BAR!!! All they're doing at the bar anyway is watering down their liquor and putting in 'measured shots.' For what you pay there, you could have yourself a gallon by the time the night is over. Bars aren't any fun anymore. Been there done that when I was younger. I sware people pick up disease in there....Eewwww. I worked at a Comedy Club with the bar flys and I couldn't wait to leave work at 3 a.m. New Years was awful...slobs.

Vote republican. From what I see, the dems want to control everything we do and say. They come off sounding like the party who REALLY cares about individuals, with all the handouts and programs, when in reality they want to keep people down and reliant on government. Peoples rights are being taken away, a little at a time, but the thing with this is, whether you are a smoker or not, this continuous infringement of our rights will one day affect EVERYBODY one way or another. So for all the people out there who are doing a little victory dance because they are so anti-smoking, wait until it's your turn and it's something YOU enjoy. It will happen. There are ways this smoking issue could be handled instead of this..

Because the smoking bans are about more than bars and second hand smoking. They have to do with public health and the rising cost of health care and health insurance.

Personally...smoke if you want. But there should be some sort of way that their life choices aren't paid for by the rest of society.

I think that was more of a health related thing man, One of those healthier work place do dats. However, stopping people from imposing their values and beliefs on a person cannot be stopped as getting said people to stop would be you imposing your belief on them to stop imposing their beliefs... ?

And British Colubia has had this for quite a few years man.
