If your school nurse didn't offer any advice, then talk with your doctor. If you've just starting having periods, then I wouldn't recommend tampons just yet. I too was somewhat afraid of them while in high school even though other girls were using them. My fear was, "what if that string broke and the thing got stuck in there." Tampons can also be uncomfortable if you can't change often enough. And there is the risk of developing toxic shock syndrome from tampons. Get protection for heavier days and don't be embarrassed to talk with your doctor, especially if you have clots and an extra heavy flow. He/she is better equipped to help with those issues then all of us in Answers. I began while in elementary school and know the feeling of being self conscious. Once in fifth grade my teacher took me home during a recess so I could change. I had flowed right through my slip to my dress and onto the chair. There just wasn't any way for me to take an extra pad to school. We had no lockers, just cloak rooms. And I didn't carry a purse 'til high school. That's how old I am. It was't always fun. Wish I knew then what I know now. Having periods is now part of your "normal" life. It's part of being female. Makes you special; you have the gift of bringing life into this world. Talk with your doctor about any issues you may have.

all i can say is that make sure you take enough necessities with you and maybe a bottle of pain killers for if you get craps or not. i know it sucks but at least its better for your period to start and be done by the beginning of your trip where you have the stuff than where it catches you in the middle of your trip and this can spoil the trip. so just stick with it and enjoy yourself.

Bring water bottles, so you can drink plenty of water, and remember your pads or tampons. Tampons are a lot easier for traveling, especially if you're going to be swimming. And if you get cramps remember to bring pain medication! Good Luck!

Pack lots of tampons and pads. I don't really know what you are looking for...
I really do hate it when that happens, though.
