Incidentally, for you zombie fans out there, the word "zombie" is of West African origin and was originally the name of a snake god, but acquired the modern meaning of "reanimated corpse" in the Voodoo religions of the West Indies. "Zombie" may also have been influenced by the Spanish "sombra," meaning "shade" or "ghost."

EDIT--on a less serious note, it may also be used to describe me--insominac typing Answers at 0230

A zombie is purportedly a dead person (or other animal) whose body has been re-animated. Stories of zombies originated in the Afro-Caribbean spiritual belief system of Vodoun (Voodoo), where zombies are humans who have had their "Ti Bon Ange" (Creole from the French "petit bon ange", or "little good angel") or soul stolen by supernatural means or shamanic medicine, and who thus lack free will and are forced to work as uncomplaining slaves for a "zombie master", typically on plantations. It is widely thought that, if such "zombies" existed, they were in fact heavily drugged but still-living humans.

Other more macabre versions of zombies have become a staple of modern horror fiction

The undead, the deceased which have come back to life after death. they are much like the nosferatu (vampires), but they feed on human flesh not only blood. They are neither alive nor dead. They are dead bodies which are walking around only by infected cells which makes them crave the desire for human flesh. They can be killed only by destroying the brain or removing the head. They move rather slow, but hollywood has changed the myth of zombies by making them move faster or even run, just for entertainment. Just one bite, one scratch, or just one drop of blood, and you will become one of them, if you know anyone who has been bitten, isolate them immediately and destroy the brain or remove the head, donnot take any chances, when one becomes a zombie, there is nomore of that person left inside that body, only a walking corpse moving only by manipulated brain cells.

Zombies are human bodies that are dead. Evil spirits control them to scare humans.(That is what other people think) But for me it is like a virus that makes the human turn into a zombie. Zombies are like vampires that suck blood but zombies include internal organs. Like vampires, zombies' saliva contains a virus that when you got contaminated by injecting it to your blood stream you slowly turn to one.

It means a dead walking man, i suppose. Anyway, zombie is only a concept, but does not exist in reality.

A zombie, in Haiti, is a creole word which designs the bodies without soul that works mechanically, as robots, after being revived by 'woodoo' rites. Nonexistents corpses, animated by sorcery, work in lands and quarries for who possesses the mistery to give them artificial life after death.
They are not, as Lazarus, ressurrects. Witches choose recent bodies without signs of decay, and after clandestine exhumation they 'galvanize' them with letanies of black exorcisms. They tyranize him/her in exhausting works.
That's why haitians (who can afford it, it´s the poorest Country in the world) bury their parents in graves under hermetic stones os solid brick, and very near the houses, to prevent them from abduction before rottenness. Haitians, whose african roots seem recent and ruling, strongly believe in that liturgical__ and useful vampirism.
Woodoo exorcism to convert a corpse in zombie:
"Béf marron saché chemin caille. Moins mandé ça li gagnin. Nous Gros Morne tout moon malade!" Or: "Damballa, Damballa calls you". Don't try it.
