Or is it really necessary to protect the scorers on the team?

it will never be out of the game. yes you don't see as much today as in the day, but to tell you the truth you will start to see more and more in the next 5 to 10 years cause there's going to be more smaller players in the league then ever and the bigger players that can skate fast and are more physical will start to use that as their advantage. then they will start to bully the smaller players then the goons will come back more and more cause these little player will need to be protected again against the bigger players that have skill and the physical side also.

so no the fighting will never be banned from the NHL and like I said you will start to see more fighting in the next 5 years, but not like in the 70's and 80's but there will be more then their is in today's NHL.

EZC>>>>if fighting was banned in the NHL then they wouldn't be able to fight. yes you do get a penalty but its part of the game.
so if its part of the game then its not banned. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO FIGHT IN THE NHL PERIOD.

and to the guy that said about the fighting being banned in european leauges yes your right, but their is a 80% chance that in europe they will bring fighting in and the their been talks about making the arenas the same size as the NHL arenas cause the games are more exiting. this is from Jari Kurri and other fellow european players that have played in the NHL and are working with the european teams today and its going to happen. its funny how everybody thinks take out fighting, make the arenas the size of the internatinal rinks and in europe they want to change it all to the way it is here in the NHL.

One dimensional players suck. Scorers should be able to protect themselves, like a few games back when a guy came after Max Afinegenov and Max settled it by picking the other guy up and throwing him on the ice. Hockey is a contact sport, and if people don't like that, well I guess they should go take up figure skating and stop being sissies. Even women are rough when they play hockey! If fighting is banned, the next thing to go is checking, then all body contact, and pretty soon you have Disney on Ice instead of the NHL. IMO, hockey has been "prettied up" enough with all the changes made in the "New NHL". Gone are the days of the big, scary enforcers like Rob Ray, but fighting is and should remain some part of the game! A fight can set the tone at the start of a game, change the momentum mid-game, or spark a great rivalry for games to come. Don't take away a tried and true strategic part of the game!

Fighting is banned from professional hockey. A fighting player recieves a five minute major and sometimes a game misconduct. It is a penalty just like anything else done against the rules. I think what your asking is will fighting ever be punished more severely in hockey, such as with large suspensions. Probably not. I would say, however, the fighting has decreased a lot in all upper levels of hockey over the last 20 or 30 years.

Have you heard the joke about the guy who went to a fight and a hockey game broke out? LOL!

I doubt that fighting will ever be banned outright. Each game I watch, there is a bit of a dust up but rarely does it rise to the level of fighting (where there is a 5 minute penalty). I think the players are out to win, they get frustrated, and they take it out on the closest opponent. Or they are getting even for something that was done to them in a previous game or period. They just want to get it out of their system, not hurt the other players. If they wanted to inflict damage, they would use their sticks or their skates! I always enjoy seeing the fights and hope they are always a part of the NHL.

Go Blues!

Fighting is definately a part of the game and probably needed to avoid having players give cheap shots. Also take a look at other sports when there is a cheap shot or when a team/player gets frustrated. It may turn into a big brawl. If two NFL players get into a shoving match what happens? An unsportsmanlike conduct on each player that cancel out, nothing is accomplished. In the NHL, the players will fight, get it out of their system, then go to the box for 5 minutes.

Why would you want to ban fighting in hockey? What other sport do you know of that lets two players pummel the crap out of each other? Well, BOXING but hockey's more of a street brawl compared to that. And yes, I do think that that there will be fewer fans if they banned fighting. Come to think of it, they tried doing that back in the mid-90s, or at least cracking down hard on it. That resulted in players using their sticks to stand up for themselves as a scare tactic. Can you say assault with a weapon, Marty McSorley? They shouldn't ban fighting from hockey, and they should even increase it just a little.

I hate people who complain about the fighting, those people can go watch the NFL, and call all the penalties with the referees. I quit watching football because there are to many rules, If you don't like the fighting don't watch it. It is necessary for the sport to grow, Last night at Preds vs Ducks, the girl behind me said this is my first game I hope there is a fight. She got to see a few. A lot of people come to see them get frustrated, and take it out on each other.

Fighting will always be a part of the NHL. It isn't the only reason why I watch it, but I enjoy seeing it nevertheless. As far as star players are concerned there is a rule, you take out our star player, and we will take out yours. So in a way, it does protect the star players. So, I don't think that fighting will ever be banned in hockey.

Fighting is already banned in most foreign leagues, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it in the NHL at some point, but not necessarily in the near future though. Eventually someone is going to get seriously injured and the NHL will give in to the politics and put an end to it. I wont be happy when it does happen, but its just a matter of time.
