Do you even know what Goth is? Really? It was an Eastern European Germanic tribe that inhabited the now Romania area. They are known for their architecture and becoming very catholic after continuous run ins with the Romans. (Hence, the current name.) Their flag was Orange with black cross.

That is only the root of the word, not the root of the culture. I assure you that the Goths and Visigoths did not run around in fishnets and black eyeliner.

You have your history wrong, too. They were not known for their architecture, because they lived in friggin' huts. "Gothic" cathedrals were called "Gothic" because at the time, the word gothic = barbaric / uncivilised person (like the Barbarians; see also Vandals [where we get the word "vandalism"]).

Most people at the time thought that these new churches were ugly and barbaric, so they called them "Gothic". (Funny, because we think they're so beautiful today).

Much later, around the late 1800's, "Gothic literature" started to emerge. These types of stories were based on the supernatural, and often had to do with vampires / ghosts / madness / exorcisms / murders / the occult. This was tied into religion, especially Catholicism, because of these themes.

AND...a bit later, like the late 1970's, there were some post-punk bands that had a "dark" sound and theme to their music...I won't get into which ones, (that's a topic for another time) but they were labelled "Gothic" by the media, because of the similarities in their lyrics to "Gothic literature".

Fans of this new "Gothic music", who liked the idea of the association with Victorian era "Gothic literature" started dressing in a Victorian style (corsets, long dresses, intricate hair styles, etc.)

In other words: Goths today have nothing to do with *those* Goths. That's just how the word spread.

(p.s. Visigoths were not Catholic.

"Visigoths adopted Arianism, a branch of Christianity that believed that Jesus was not an aspect of God in the Trinity, but a separate being created directly beneath God. This belief was in opposition to the tenets of mainstream Catholicism, which achieved a religious monopoly in the 4th and 5th century."

Also, even though many, if not most Visigoths were Christian by the time they disappeared, some still practiced their old Germanic pagan religion, Asatru.)

Probably because the current Goth subculture has no tie-in or relation to the ancient Goths at all. It comes from out of the punk scene and merely shares the unfortunate name. There may be some similarities, but it's not like today's Goths can trace themselves back to the old Goths.

Or they just don't care.

I do, but than I'm a history grad student. However, the modern Gothic subculture really derives from the Enlightenment Romantic era, and their idealization of the Gothic period, not the Gothic period itself.
