How is it that so many teams can pay star athletes so many millions of dollars for their contracts?Do they get paid so much per hour, per game, per week, per month? How does that work?

I'm not sure about other pro sports, it depends on the team. For example, I read in the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune that the Minnesota Twins players who are under contract unless their contract specifically states otherwise and Twins agree to it, are paid weekly. Minor leaguers brought to fill in at the major league level are paid the league minimum pro-rated per game. The Vikings also pay their players every week of the season 16X, so that their full salary is paid in full by the last game of the season. Of course, it too depends on how their contract is structured. Some have incentives put in and so forth, so the paycheck may differ from payday to payday depending on the conditions set forth in the contract. The teams are able to pay the star athletes and everyone else for that matter, just simply by being able to own a major league franchise you have to be able to prove a hell of lot liquid asset potential. (Lotsa cash). there are minimum requirements for every league........

They would normally get paid per game but it veries with different contracts, whatever the player signs for is how they get paid.

Most sports pay their athletes on the 1st and 15th of every month during their season.
