A MAC address allows an Ethernet card to know if a data packet belongs to that card. Think of it like a permanent IP address that is only quasi unique.

Contrary to popular belief, MAC addresses are not sent over the internet. Why? While the internet and your home network can communicate, they do so using TCP/IP. TCP/IP is transmitted by Ethernet at home while other places, such as a major internet backbone provider use frame relay or some other technology that not too many people here know about. Your MAC address is conveniently filtered at your dial-up, DSL, cable, or other internet connect for the simple reason the the internet doesn't use MAC addresses.

MAC stands for Media Access Control address. MAC is a unique ID No. of LAN Card witch is inbound with the LAN Card. MAC is used for unicasting in the N/w. Though the IP may be in different N/w but MAC can not be same. When a computer request for some thing from a server, its IP and MAC is combined in a packet and send to the server. Then server sends the response to the client.
