They're usually cocky, especially if they're under 35 or so. Clapton seemed insecure, but was very confident in his abilities. Hendrix was basically humble and shy offstage, but onstage he was a head cutter....unless you were a great player you didn't want to share a stage with him. Eddie Van Halen has always been open and friendly to other players, but turns into a monster onstage. Carlos Santana is humble offsatge and an asskicker onstage.
Ray Charles was cocky AND a friggin' genius. If they seem a little bit cocky during their downtime, be assured they're gonna give their best shot, whether it's an informal jam, in the studio, or in a live setting. They have a unique gift and are gonna show the world how great they are....it's a natural thing.
