I have had many, many ovarian cysts. I was told by my ob/gyn that if they do "burst" or break open that they do (or can) leave scar tissue in your ovaries. I had a "partial" hysterectomy due to the scar tissue. If they do go down on their own, they have less chance of leaving scar tissue ---this is what I was told my 2 different ob/gyn's over the years. Good luck, i know how PAINFUL they can be:(

Depending on the type of cyst, they can. For example, a chocolate cyst (endometrioma) is potentially damaging to reproductive function. Ectopic pregnancies are also seen in women who have large endometriomas. Functional cysts, on the other hand, may not impair fertility in any way. Nonetheless, all cysts have the potential to cause adnexal torsion, irregular bleeding, and possible rupture. Anytime acute pelvic pain (may be accompanied by spotting, low grade fever and/or abdominal tenderness) presents, cyst rupture should be considered.
