What makes either one of them better then the other?

Mario seems to be faster, but Luigi has ups, which is sort of ironic seeing as, since Mario is so fat, he should be able to use his squatty legs to jump with, but then again, you would also think that Luigi could run faster with them long legs, so I don't know, but I'm gonna have to go with Mario solely based on the fact that everybody knows Luigi is hookin up with the princess behind Mario's back and that ain't cool

Luigi is way better cuz he is taller and could stop on mario's short little body. Mario is also fat while Luigi is slim so Luigi probably could run faster if they were real life characters...n big guys are not meant for jumping!

Mario because the game is all about him and Luigi is just a helper to Mario

Well, in some of the games, they have different attributes. I prefer Luigi's higher jump to Mario's superior fireballs.
