You are more likely to have twins then most people, simply because it runs in your family. Technically, I don't think there's a 'twin gene' or anything, but your families are both full of twins, which means that hyper ovulation must run in the family.
I had twins, my Mom had twins (two of my siblings) and my kids' dad has twins in his family too, but they were a few generations back. The only people more likey to have twins than you and your hubby would be people who are twins themselves.
The situation your mom had is called unformed twin, disappearing twin syndrome, or vanishing twin syndrome, and here's a link that explains it better: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art2998.asp

Technically the only chance you could have twins is your mother's side and there history. I've done alot of research for this too. First, being identical twins is pure luck has nothing to do with hereditary. Especially on your fathers side, he only delivers the X chromosone. Your husband, again only delivers the X chromosone so he can not give you twins. He can provide all the fish (sperm) let's just say millions, but to have twins you have to provide the bowls (eggs).
Now, your mothers side is different. You provide the XY chromosone. So, your mother may have been a twin but we don't know fraternal or identical... Fraternal gives you the better chance of having twins as stated early identical is pure luck. I read in previous post about hyper-ovulation which is releasing more then one egg which is associated with woman having twin hereditary.
Another percentage is more then one pregnancy say your 2nd or 3rd increases your chance of multiple births.
I've also read about Vanishing Twin Syndrome but haven't known anyone close to me who has gone through it.
I did alot of research because my mother is a fraternal twin and my doc was about to stick me on Clomid which gives 10% raising the bar on multiples... I have a high enough rate I don't need to up it. Twins are beautiful but as long as I can give them back! I just found out I'm pregnant today so when I go to the doc I don't have to get Clomid. whew!

There was a story a few years ago about a woman who had an undeveloped twin inside her chest or something like that. I don't know how common it is, but it does happen.
As for whether you're likely to have twins, my memory from h/s biology was that twins tended to skip a generation and were usually passed along by females - so your dad being a twin may not be a factor. However, that genetic link might only be for fraternal twins.

Had read this story that the twin identical sister married to identical brothers, and other sister got pregnant, and delivered one baby girl...Now they just waiting the other sister to get pregnant to see if the baby will be look the same as her cousin.
My auntie are twins, and my auntie's uncle also twins...its just run on the family..but I never heard anything that I have a twin nephew/nieces at all..
so the chances sometimes highly likely..

Heard of that situation many times - the unformed or partially reabsorbed twin.
I've heard many times that twins tend to skip a generation, but with that propensity for twins in your family on both sides, your odds are higher that you could have twins. How high? Not sure. You could ask your family doctor though and he'll have better info for you.

Twins does not bypass a era. Fraternal twins in simple terms comes from the womans section, so which you have a extra robust possibility of twins than female that have not have been given fraternal twins of their kinfolk! undecided what the probability is regardless of the incontrovertible fact that sorry. Wishing you success!!!!

I have twins and they are the first ones born into either one of our families in more than 3 generations. Can't track longer than 5 in mine and only past 3 in hers. With a family history you're looking at better than 25%. After the typical generation skip (being you not being a twin) you're looking at better than 40%.

How about that - you try and try until you get twins? Just think, if you do, how wonderfully cute they'll be: all dressed in the same clothes, looking so cute and chubby - you could get the LOVEx2 with the twins.
If not, don't get discouraged, since there is less stress in raising one baby at a time.
Good luck!

Twins running in your side of the family give you a good chance to have twins. Your husband having twins on his side has nothing to do with it, men cannot cause their partner to have twins, but he could pass the trait on to your daughter if you have one.
